What Are We Waiting For?

Reading a story on the Wisconsin Ag Connection website about tax credits for Renewable Fuels, I was dumbfounded by the following quote, "The Department of Energy has set a goal of producing 5 percent of U.S. electricity through wind power by 2020." At first glance that is a great first step, but I read the following from Energy Priorities, "The European Union has 34,200 MW of installed wind energy capacity, and has the aggressive target of generating 22 percent of its electricity from wind by 2010." TEN years earlier and 17% MORE of its energy needs, hence the title of this post, What are we (United States) waiting for? - JRusW

Many years ago most govs in Europe evidently chose to increase tax on gas to encourage fuel economy and a lifestyle that differs from that in the US. I have read "peak oilers" that say we will have to adopt a more european lifestyle.

By this they mean smaller cars and more walking friendly cities and towns. I dont think Europe has moved in the "suburban" direction that we have.

Whether or not this fuel tax was forward looking or just necessary to suport the socialism is up for debate. But, either way Europeans may weather the peak better than Americans. dag
